Financial aid

NSSU offers several financial aid programs as described below to support the education of students that are of outstanding character and academic performance as well as students that are facing difficulty in continuing their education at NSSU due to financial reason. The following are the main financial aid programs offered by NSSU.

NSSU’s own tuition discount/exemption and grant program

NSSU scholarship program

NSSU has its own scholarship program of tuition discount/exemption for its students that exhibit excellent academic or athletic performance and possess sound mental and physical health. The program involves a screening held the NSSU scholarship recipient selection committee, through which recipients are chosen each academic year. Therefore, it is possible for a current scholarship recipient that qualified in the previous year to be disqualified for the next year’s scholarship, if the scholarship recipient selection committee makes such a decision due to the student’s declining academic or athletic performance, etc.

NSSU tuition discount/exemption program

NSSU offers its own tuition discount/exemption program to its tuition-paying students to reduce their financial burden.

Eligibility criteria:

Tuition discount/exemption and grants under the new national higher-education financial aid program

New national higher-education financial aid program

The support program is intended to aid the students from low-income households truly in need of support that are pursuing their studies at universities, etc. where high-quality education is provided that is essential for developing them into individuals with rich human qualities and creativity that are able to operate as independent and thriving members of society, so that the aid to reduce their economic burden for their studies would contribute to the development of an environment where they are able to have and raise their children with a better sense of security and ease, which would in turn improve the rapidly declining birthrate in Japan (quoted from Article 1 of the Act on the Provision of Support to Students at Universities, etc.).

Grants and loans by external organizations

Japan Student Services Organization’s financial aid programs

■Grant program
This is the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) grant program available under the new national higher-education financial aid program. If a student is selected as a grant recipient, it will, in principle, receive a monthly remittance in the amount (per month) as specified in the table on the right, which is decided by the type of higher-education institution (i.e., national, public, or private) it is attending and its commute category (whether commuting from its guardian’s house or elsewhere), from the time the student’s grant application is officially approved until it graduates from the institution (i.e., until the specified period of the institution’s curriculum comes to an end), based on the income bracket of the student’s household. However, an annual review is conducted on each grant recipient’s status as to its academic performance and its household’s current income level to verify its eligibility, based upon which it is possible for a grant recipient to be switched to a different category or see its grant recipient status suspended or revoked. Therefore, even if a student is selected as a grant recipient under this program, it does not mean that it is guaranteed continuous grant payments until graduation (i.e., until the specified period of the institution’s curriculum comes to an end).

■Loan program
This is the educational loan program run by the national government that receives more applications than any other scholarship programs, consisting of Class 1 (interest-free loan) and Class 2 (interest-bearing loan) categories, both of which must be repaid over time post graduation. If a student requires financial assistance due to a sudden negative change to its financial condition within the last year, a consultation is also available. This loan program is also accessible through a prearrangement, so if a prospective student attending a high school, etc. wants to use this option, it may file a loan prearrangement application with the high school, etc. before enrolling at NSSU. For more details, please check with the JASSO.

Financial aid programs offered by municipalities (prefectures, etc.)

Some of these financial aid programs require the students to file their applications through the universities, while others require that the applications be filed directly with the municipalities. As the rules and procedures are different from one municipality to the next, a student considering using such program is advised to directly contact the municipality of which its parents are residents, or the board of education, etc. there for inquiry.

Educational loans

If you are a newly matriculating student, you may apply for the following educational loan during the enrollment process as needed.

Japan Finance Corporation’s educational loan program (national financial service)

This is a national loan program intended for use by those in need of educational funding. The loan program can be accessed not only at Japan Finance Corporation (JFC) branches but also through other banks, credit unions, credit cooperatives, labor banks, agricultural cooperatives, and fishery cooperatives. To take out this loan, each applicant must enter into a contract with JFC directly.

Educational loan programs offered by NSSU-arranged financial service companies

These programs arranged between NSSU and the contracted financial companies allow NSSU students to take out educational loans on more favorable terms than normal. Use of these programs involves prescreening by the companies to verify applicants’ eligibility, application review, and interest rate setting.
